By Danny Serratelli
Jamar "Silk" Carter's body was found early yesterday morning by firefighters responding to a fire at his Newark, New Jersey home. The gruesome discovery was made when firefighters performed an initial sweep of the two-story wood structure; his charred body was located in the kitchen. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Carter, a father of four will be missed by all of those in community. Luckily, the two children who lived with him were not home at the time. Carter had left them with his mother the night before the blaze following a late night party he had attended with family members.
As a fighter the slick boxing southpaw compiled a 15-6 record with 3 KO's. He had been a regular on Newark's local cards for several years, and was coming off of a unanimous decision win at the Foxwoods in Connecticut in March of this year. The 36-year-old Carter turned pro in 1994 and won his first 10 fights. Like most fighters, he juggled his boxing career with a full time job, he worked for a Children's hospital. I personally remember Carter from the gym, a good guy who always handled his business, both in and out of the ring.
Carter was also studying to be a minister, and it was the local minister from the Baptist church he had been attending for the last 6 years who announced his death during yesterday morning's service. Carter's pastor Niles Wilson had this to say about the fallen fighter: "He worked with the youth and the men in the church and that he was the kind of brother that would give you the shirt off of his back. He will truly be missed."
Danny Serratelli and the Bragging Rights Corner's family extends its condolences to the Carter family. May Jamar Carter rest in peace.
